CAREER EXPLORATION PROJECT

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project will be summative project worth 30% of your 1st marking period grade. There will be four parts to the project.

IMPORTANT: Points will be deducted for not following these directions when submitting your work: 

  • Title files (documents and presentations):           NAME_Career Exploration
  • Include a subject line in your e-mail titled:          Career Exploration

Part One: Career Exploration & Journal Entry on Naviance (15 Points)

This activity includes logging on to your Naviance Account and taking a short Quiz to help you determine how your interest will align with certain fields of study. You will also create a journal entry in Naviance to answer a reflection question based on your results.

You will need your student OSIS # (ID Number) which can be found on your ID Card. 

Make sure you share your journal entry with Teacher and Counselor to get credit.

Part Two: Research  and Report

Write about 2 careers after researching them at the Bureau of Labor Statistics Student Resource Center  (25 points)

This activity will allow you to practice your research and writing skills.  Answer the following question about 2 different careers that interest you. Use Google Docs or Microsoft Word to create your document.

You can use these as a template: 

Career Title

  1. How does the occupation fit your skills and interests?
  2. What will you be doing in the occupation?
  3. Describe the work environment.
  4. What is the necessary education and/or training?
  5. How much does this occupation pay? What do the top 10 percent earn? The bottom 10 percent?
  6. Is the occupation projected to grow, decline, or remain unchanged? Why?
  7. What are 2 similar occupations related to this career?  

Part Three: Creating your Presentation (40 points)

Select two or more occupations and prepare a report and/or presentation. You must include the following information:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

1st Slide:  Title Slide

  • Full Name
  • Class (Career and Technical Education)
  • Date / Semester

2nd  Slide:

  • What are your hobbies,  interests and future dreams?
  • What type of work experience have you had in the past?
  • What types of majors or careers were you interested in before you started the project? If you were not interested in any specific career or college major, that’s okay, you can say that in your presentation. 

3rd  Slide: 

  • After taking the Naviance Career Cluster Quiz, what were the top three careers that it suggested based on your interested?
  • Was this what you expected? Why or Why not?

4th -6th Slide: 

  • Summarize 2 careers you are interested in ( one per slide)
  • What interest you about these careers? What skills do you need?
  • How do you become one?  What type of education or training is needed?
  • What is the job outlook and pay range?
  • Pictures and examples of business or companies you could possibly work for

7th Slide:

Find someone with a job in the occupation you are interested in, and interview him or her or research someone with this occupation. Find out:

  • What kind of work the person does and title.
  • What the person likes and dislikes about the job.
  • What advice the person would give to someone interested in a career in this field.

8th Slide: Closing Slide: 

  • What are some further questions or concerns you have about his career field?
  • What do you need to do RIGHT NOW to help prepare you for this field or next steps to enter this career field.

Part Four: Presenting  (20 points)

You will present your research and findings to the class in a 5 minute or less presentation.

You will use professional verbal and non verbal communication during your presentation and while listening to other students.

You will be graded on your presentation skills and your behavior as an audience member. 

You will be required to complete a feedback form during presentations and points will be deducted for inappropriate or disrespectful behavior.
